Beginning Sewing: Making a Japanese Knot Bag

Japanese knot bag is small open tote bag, but with a twist. It has asymmetrical handles, and one of the handles slips through the other to form a knot and close the bag. The handle could be slightly longer, or up to three times as long when compared to the other handle.

You will learn:

  •  How to sew a straight stitch using the different settings on the sewing machine by using different seem allowance - 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch etc.
  •  Learn when to use different pressor feet on your sewing project/machine.
  • Learn how to make a pocket with zipper (sewing only class) 
  •  How to overcast seems on a project (no open seems)
  •  Learn to Top stitch for a beautiful finish to any project.
  • Learn how to make a pattern for your project.
 (For this class you must have some sewing experience or have completed our “machine basic class”. You must also know how to make a bobbin/thread your own machine)

 Bring your lunch.  You will only have 30 min.

Skill Details: For this class you must have had some sewing experience or taken our "machine basic" class. You will need to be able to make a bobbin/thread your own machine.
Materials Included: SCI will furnish a pattern paper
Requirements: You will need to BRING TO CLASS: Sewing Machine in good working order with power cord and foot control, All your Sewing machine's accessories including accessory tools and book for you machine model fabric cutting scissors ( no longer than 8 in in length); 12" zipper coordinating with the fabric(sewing only class), sewing thread clips or straight pins; straight pin caddy; tape measure; wash -away pen/heat disappearing pen; pencil or pen to draw your pattern seam gauge; seam ripper; small scissors to use at your machine; new sewing machine needles 80/14 universal will be a good start; (if you don't have the required class items you may purchase a kit @ SCI for $40.00) 100 % cotton fabric only 2 pieces 1 yd each of coordinating fabric, No one way directional fabrics. If you are embroidering a design on your bag then one fabric can have a subtle print or no print.
